SSD Hard Drive wont erase

I have a 2008 iMac with a 500GB SSD hard drive running Mojave patch from dosdude1. I want to erase the hard drive but cannot because the erase and unmount buttons are greyed out. I have tried to make a bootable disk for USB and it is not recognized to boot from. The error message reads ”cannot install Mojave because it is not an HFS file
any thoughts?
