Sound problem

I am suddenly not getting sound through my iMac speakers. In system preferences / sound, the speakers are not listed as a device for sound output, although headphones is and the headphones do work. When I restart the machine the start-up fanfare does come through the speakers. I am still using OS 10.6.8.
Does anyone have any idea what I can do to restore my sound, please?

Thanks Spawn_Dooley. I seem to have solved the problem, at least for the moment, by plugging in and removing headphones. This has put the Internal Speakers option back into the System Preferences / Sound / Output menu and the speakers now work fine.

Strange! Glad you sorted it out though
