Slow Catalina

I updated to Catalina and my iMac slowed. Took it to a Mac store genius who reset it and installed a fresh Catalina.
Then I reloaded my data from my time machine. It runs a little faster but is still very slow.
My Mac has a 3.6GHz quad core intel i5 processor and 8GB 1600MHz DDR3 memory and I am wondering if this is up to running Catalina at acceptable speeds.
I asked the genius and he said it would be fine, but I still have the problem.
Any ideas

Hello and welcome.

-Is it slow all the time, or when doing certain things?
-Which exact model is the iMac?
-How much free space on the drive?
-Do you have any third-party utilities running - i.e. MacKeeper, anti-virus, etc?
