Excruciatingly slow, suspiciously huge amount of tasks in Activity Monitor

This is a screenshot of ALL of the things running in Activity Monitor.

I've tried many things to figure out how to get my Mac running faster, but none of them seem to work.

Does it look like something is wrong by how many things are all processing at once or is this normal?

-Which version of OS X/macOS?
-How much free space is left on the drive?

That does look slightly large, but not totally out of the ordinary. First recommendation would be to quit all applications and restart. See if that tames it a bit.

As for the overall slowness, that can be contributed to many things - not restarting on a regular basis, having a large number of applications running simultaneously, third-party utilities and antivirus applications running in the background, multiple cloud-based syncing apps like iCloud/Dropbox/Google Drive running simultaneously, low free disk space, etc.
