Shuts Down Or Freezes When I Close Lid

I started having this problem pretty much whenever I close my laptop lid. When I open it up the screen stays off and even pressing the power button won't wake it up. I either have to wait a while, close it and open it again, or hold the power button until it resets but sometimes that takes a few tries.

It doesn't take long to reboot, but it's annoying because I have to deal with all the stupid notifications and pop ups (Adobe Creative Suit, Cloud Log In, Steam, etc).

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? And on a somewhat related note how to shut off Cloud notifications? I don't EVER intend to log into the cloud, and therefore I will NEVER enter a password or create an account so hopefully there is a way to make my Macbook stop bothering me about it.

-Most of the pop-ups for those apps can be turned off within their preference settings.
-What iCloud notifications are you getting?
