Running with a very old macbook pro (2008 maybe). Can't seem to reinstall OS X and I hit obstacles no matter what angle I come at.

When I say just to reinstall OS X, from the Disk Utility, it says "This is not a supported method. Please run install OS X Mavericks.app that you downloaded from the App Store."

I've downloaded the OS X to a thumb drive, but it won't recognize the drive them I restart and hold "options" key.

When I try to manipulate it using the terminal commands such as "createinstallmedia" and "sudo" are not found.

Any suggestions? I've scoured the internet up to this point. Thanks!

Hello and welcome.

-You can use DiskMaker X to create a bootable OS X installer on a flash drive. It won't work if you simply copy the Install OS X Mavericks application downloaded from the App Store.
-Have you tried running the Install OS X Mavericks application directly from the Applications folder after downloading it?
-What version of OS X are you running now?
