Problem installing update

Installation of update failed but it won’t let me quit the update.
I can only shut down or restart and the update just keeps trying (and failing) to install

-Which exact model Mac?
-Which version of Mac OS X/macOS?
-What update is failing?
-How are you attempting the update?
-How much free space on your drive?
