I have clobbered something which has to do with Apache 1.3.29 on my OS 10.4.7 system. I'd appreciate any suggestions for fixing the problem short of reinstalling Tiger from scratch.

The problem shows up when I try to start "Personal Web Sharing" in the "Sharing" System Preference panel.

I get the alert:

"The application httpd quite unexpectedly"
2006-09-06 06:30:49 -0500

EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001)
KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE (0x0002) at 0x00000010

1 ap_fini_vhost_config + 64
2 ap_read_config + 204
3 main + 820
4 _start + 444
5 start + 48

Then the panel says "Web Sharing starting up..." but it never finishes.

I have tried installing "MacOSXUpdCombo10.4.7PPC" but the same thing happens as before.

I am reluctant to reinstall Tiger 10.4.0 from the DVD and then apply the Combo update just mentioned, since I am not sure of the integrity of my DVD. I have tried to reboot from it several times, and have yet to get it to work, even though the disc is the one used to install Tiger in the first place.

Every thing about my current system works fine except the Sharing and I'm not in dire need of it, so I am thinking it may be best to wait for the release of "Leopard" next Spring unless someone can guide me to patching what I have now.

I appreciate having this forum to turn to.

Hi K9garms, and welcome :)

Have you got Application Enhancer installed from Unsanity by any chance?

Also, try creating a new account, and then log on to that account, and see if the same thing happens.

Hi, Kyomil & thanks for getting the ball rolling so soon.
Yes, I do have Application Inhancer installed along with 11 routines which use it.
I'll try the new account bit right away and post the results ASAP

Hi again, Kyomil,

I pursued this issue as you suggested, but nothing really changed; i.e.:
• I logged in as another user and tried to start PWS - the start button on the preference panel was grayed-out, so nothing happened.
• I restarted as the second user and The "httpd quite unexpectedly" alert came during reloading. The PWS preference panel was non-functional.
• I switched back to my main user account; disabled Application Enhancer (AE) through the "Troubleshooting" procedure of it's preference panel; restarted; and got the same httpd abort as I have been getting.
• After another restart as the main owner, I am back to where I was originally.

I should mention that my PWS problem came about after I attempted to install the "MyPhoto" software package (http://agent0068.dyndns.org/~mike/projects/myPhoto/) using the installer provided. Something happened during the installation, I don't remember just what, and the installer could not finish. I attempted the manual installation, following the instructions provided in the package, and my PWS problem was the result.

This is what I got for attempting something which I should have realized was "over my head"... live and learn.

Any additional ideas to try will be greatly appreciated.

Best wishes,
K9garms

Hello again :)

The program you downloaded is not an official Apple program, and this could be the cause of your problem in that it has corrupted something in the library and or system.

It could also be that your APE (App enhancer) is conflicting with the program and turning off APE is not enough sometimes, you need to get rid of some of the routines to pinpoint the problem, especially if one of the routines points to iphoto.

Before we go that far, we need to take a look at your crash reporter log, which is usually found in Users >YourUserName >Library >Logs >CrashReporter.

Meanwhile, please find all references on your system to the "MyPhoto" software package and delete them (be careful and ensure anything you delete pertains to this program only) and try again.

When you say you have PWS turned on, do you mean personal file sharing under "sharing" in system preferences? What do you have ticked under there? Try turning all personal sharing off after you have deleted all references to the program you downloaded and see what happens. :)

 Sorry for delay in replying,

Yes: System Preferences-->Sharimg -->Services-->Personal Web Services--Start button ("Sequence").

Following your suggestions, I've purged all "Myphoto"related files and restarted with APE active--->Got "httpd abort" reloading files (attached crash.log 1);performed "sequence"-->Got "httpd abort" again(attached Problem report 2)
I deactivated APE by Using "Troubleshooting" instructions of its' system preference panel-->restarted ("restart B")-->no http abort at reload but got same type abort for "Phoenix Slides.app"-->performed "sequence"-->got "httpd abort"(attached Problem report 3)

I hope you can follow all of this and can find something in the crash logs. I hate to take any more of your time on this. I'm willing to accept the fact that I screwed up my system and will have to rebuild it some how, some day.

All the best :) k9garms

Hi :)

I will have a looksy at those logs over the weekend.

Did you turn off AND deactivate PWS? Try doing that, and then get rid of all the APE routines and then disable APE. Delete the APE .plist file (preference file ) too. Now with all that done, what happens?

Hi there,

can I ask what the 'goal' is ?

If it doesn't affect the way that you use your Mac then I wouldn't worry about it.

Generally in situations like this you can delete every 'suspect' plist file, rogue config file and still have problems. Then you still end up doing an Archive & Install.

I understand that your DVD is suspect and you haven't been able to successfully boot from it...what happens ?

Do you have any external drives ? Have you got backups of all your important data ?

regards

Re: Personal Web Sharing Problem on OSX 10.4.11

I'm looking for some help with the same or simllar problem. I'm trying to turn on my Apache server. When I go through the System Profiler-sharing-turn on web sharing. I get the following error in my console.
Processing config directory: /private/etc/httpd/users/*.conf
Processing config file: /private/etc/httpd/users/+entropy-php.conf
Processing config file: /private/etc/httpd/users/bryantgover.conf
/usr/sbin/apachectl: line 193: 5882 Bus error $HTTPD
/usr/sbin/apachectl start: httpd could not be started
I was told I need to delete the extra users but I only have the one user/bryantgover on my users in System Profile-Accounts.
when I do a search for +entropy-php I get nothing...

can anyone help
I'm running a Powerbook G4 OS X 10.4.11
and have deleted everything for Apache and PHP then re-downloaded it all.

Bryant
