when i try to to convert a word doc to a pdf i get a no printer found message
i thought that macs had a pdf maker already installed?

Use the PDF button bottom left
It may be that Word is being "silly" and not doing printing the OS X native way. I see it has a preview feature built into the print dialog.
However, if you get the message immideately upon choosing File->Print and thus cannot reach the above mentioned PDF button (which is there), you can in Word 2008 just do a File -> Save As, and choose PDF from the file type list.
For 2004, you might need to add a dummy printer in the worst case.
