osx mail

I have an imax . os x 10.4 . I think that 'mail' was updated on one the software updates. since that time Ihave not been able to initialize it. The old colored ball just spins and spins. At first I would get a timeout error msg but now it just goes forever. I am new to the mac (former pc user) and would like to know if I can download an updated version from apple or if I can re-install from the original disk. I know I canin Microsft but am loathe to try it with my new mac..rluzak
