OSX 10.8 Notifications - Does Mail Program Have to be Open?

I'm trying to figure out of the notifications tab will display email notifications if the Mail program is closed or if I have to leave the Mail program open for notifications to show up.

Does anyone know if I can still get email notifications (in the new notification sidebar) with Mail deactivated?
