OSX 10.7.3 desktop help

Hi - new to forum - glad you're here to help

Just got a new computer and when I save items to my desktop they save all over the place. On my previous mac, they arranged themselves neatly on the right side in alphabetical order. There's got to be a preference somewhere...but I can't locare it!

Hi "teacherchar" follow this process:
1) Click somewhere on your Desktop so that "Finder" appears next to the Apple icon upper left.
2) Click "View" then "Sort By" and choose "Snap to Grid"
3) If you want to have your items automatically sorted, follow step (2) above again and choose your preference for sorting.

From this point forward, anything you add to the Desktop will automatically be aligned to the grid and sorted in what ever manner you selected.
