No sound on internet?

For some reason the sound on all of my web browsers stopped working. On both Safari and Mozilla, whenever I try to watch a quicktime movie, or a movie on youtube, there is no sound. Every video I try to watch has no volume, even if the volume is turned all the way up. I can listen to Itunes and other music off the internet, so I kno it isn't a problem with my speakers. I have looked under system prefences and under the preferences for my web browsers and cant find anything either fix the problem or explain what went wrong. If anybody knows how to fix this It would be much appreciated.

Which is an easier way to do the same using the infamous "open GarageBand, play a bit, close GarageBand." It resets the system to 44.1 kHz as well.
