New Mac yesterday but...

I bought a new Mac Air yesterday. Working ok this morning. Now there's a black screen with white circle and a bar across, or 'file' with a ? Can anyone say what's wrong here and how can I get out of it? It's Mohave.

First, I assume you mean MacBook Air, correct? Did you get the model with the 128 gig (actually more like 122 gig) SSD or with the 256 gig (actually more like 252 gig) SSD?

Secondly, the things you are seeing are typically issues with either the Mac OS itself, or the internal device (SSD in your case). If you purchased it "locally", you should return it for another one.

Third, how are you making posts here?

Fourth, you could also try booting the machine to the (hidden) Recovery HD partition. This link describes what is on that partition:

If you can boot to it, first select the choice entitled "Disk Utility", and let it check out the internal SSD.
