I made regular backups with Time Machine to an external drive. I was still running an old system 9 and worry about restoring to a newer system that will likely come with the replacement?
Is there anything I should do?

Hello and welcome.

-Did you mean MacBook Pro? If so, which exact model?
-Did you mean Mac OS 9 or Mac OS X 10.9.x?

You should be able to migrate data from an OS X install in a Time Machine backup to a newer Mac using the initial setup, or Migration Assistant. Depending on the versions of the Mac OS, some of the applications and settings may not transfer however.
