I have read some discussion about making the A1379 disc drive work with the newer IMACs. I don't know if the problem is with the IMAC or the OS. Doesn't Apple issue some kind of advisory when their own equipment become incompatible with newer IMACs? Surely their engineers know more about what is going on then we mortals?

Hello and welcome.

I have the older Apple MacBook Air SuperDrive Model A1270 and it works fine on my Mac mini (M1, 2020) running macOS 12.3.1 Monterey. Mine is the model that proceeded the Apple USB SuperDrive Model A1379.

I haven't heard of any issues with it with the Apple Silicon-based Macs?

Hi, I have a A1379 apple super drive, and have adapted it to my new M1 iMac. I used a good quality USB3 to USBC adaptor. and it works.
(I used this drive with my old 27" iMac under high Sierra and loved it. (but that was with Toast 9=, and that won't work on Monterey) I had to update to Toast 20.
on the old iMacs apple recommended it not be used though hubs, but direct to the computer. and I found that I had a high error rate when I did that, so never again. I have not tried running it though a hub on my M1 iMac... but may experiment when I get time.

regards Sandy.
