I have tried several times to quit Mail so as to shut down my MacbookAir (about 3 years old, using OSX 10.7.5) but it will not quit. Nor can I use Mail either - it is 'hanging'. How do I get MAIL to quit - and dare I open Mail when my machine re-starts?

Are you making any backups to an external device? That is critical.

Also, have you been performing any disk cleanup/maintenance/repairs (via software)?

As it happens, I backed up to an external disk only last week (if you might be suggesting using the back-up, I cannot restore from that as I am abroad this week and the back-up is at home). But I have never on this machine gone through any disk clean-up etc (I rather thought that Mac machines did not normally need that, a reason I converted to Mac from PC when buying this machine 3+years ago).

Without a backup at hand, any attempt at "serious" repairs could cause more issues.

Also, just like PCs, Macs have mechanical parts, and also software can become troublesome. I own a Toyota Camry (second one I have had), and if there is ever a dependable vehicle, that one is at the top. But, I STILL do some maintenance on it myself (like checking tire pressure, changing the Cabin Air and Air Filters myself, checking on the battery, etc.). And of course, I take it in for scheduled maintenance. The same applies to Mac computers. They are not invulnerable to issues. Yes, the occurrence of viruses is much less than on PCs, but there are still some out there that appear from time to time, and thus one still needs to exercise caution.

What lay behind my original question was whether there was another way to force quit Mail (when Quit does not do it), as I can neither use Mail nor shut down my machine. I am not sure if using back-up at this stage is necessary or is a solution or the only solution? This is the only time my machine has has an application failure of this sort, apart from some occasional Word crashes when using big files.

The attempts at trying to solve your issue could be somewhat "complex", and could require some directory/disk repair. Such actions can be risky if one does not have a backup immediately available.

Via the Finder menu, there is a "Force Quit" option, which could work. And then you should be able to shut down your machine. Even if that works, though, it could happen again, thus necessitating some further trouble shooting.

No matter how this issue is solved, you still need to start doing disk cleanup/maintenance/repairs.
