macbook mini-dvi out problem

i have been using the minidvi to video out converter to watch videos on my tv for some months now. Normally, when i plug the adapter in, it immediately i recognized and changes the resolution of my desktop. Now it does not do that, and it only sends a faint image of my background to the external tv screen.

Any ideas?
