can thunderbolt connect a macbook air to the mini display port of an imac

Hi,

I bought a thunderbolt cable without checking my imac-2010 carefully which only has the mini
display port. does anyone has the experience of connect the new macbook air to the mini display port of imac by thunderbolt? i want to transfer files to the imac and also want to try use it as a display.
i tried the command+f2 but it doesn't work.

Without a Ethernet dongle, you'll need to use WiFi.

If they both have Lion use AirDrop.

If not the iMac can Create Network then the Air can join the network, then log into the iMac and exchange files.
