-Which model Mac?
-Which version of OS X/macOS?
It sounds like it could be static electricity related? Is the room very dry and/or are you using the Mac on a soft surface that could generate static electricity, such as a blanket or carpet?
There aren't any settings to adjust sensitivity for "height" to the trackpad.
