Learning assembly in comp. sci. class, trying to get by using a mac.

I'm running OS 10.4.11 on a G4 iBook and I need to use the SPIM simulator. I would love to get XSpim running, but can't seem to get XDarwin operable. (Tried downloading it directly, and that version quits immediately.)

Rather than overburden my aging system with more OS add-ons anyway, I'd be fine working in terminal with regular Mac Spim, but I keep getting "Cannot open file 'xxxx'" regardless of what text editor I use or where the file is saved when I am using the load command, and none of the tutorials around seem to explain why this could be happening. Help out a budding programmer trying to stay mac!
