Mac mail problem

I recently installed Leopard and am now trying to set up email for a new website but my MAC mail program won't even open (says it won't work with the current system) and it looks like it has not been updated (2009). Can someone suggest to me a way to get it updated so that it will work?

Hello,
Software update. Click on the Apple logo on the top left of your screen, click on Software Update, then click the "Install" button.
