Hi:

I was given a Mac G4, which was great while it worked. It was runing Mac OS X and I made the mistake of automatically updating the software from the Apple website. Afterwards, every time I attempted to boot the system up, I would eventually get a black screen with white letters saying something about Darwin and asking for a login and password. Help! How do I get into my desktop?

try logging in with your username and password (the same as what it would want for software updates), then when you get a command line prompt type reboot.
To insure that it actually boots to OS X properly, try holding down the x key while it boots...

Which version of OS X are you using?
