Hi there - first post, and an irritating problem! If anyone can help, I'd realy appreciate it...

I've been having a problem with my system freezing after login. After I enter my password, the top bar appears, there is a fair pause, the dock appears, desktop, etc. The menu bar also appears, then disappears, and this is where the freeze occurs. For 20 seconds or so, my machine becomes completely unresponsive. The dock, everything freezes where it is. Then, the menu bar reappears and everything seems fine.

I've tried everything I can think of, including:

- Repairing permissions, running maintenance scripts
- Repairing the disk (fsck)
- Repairing font caches and verifying all fonts
- Zapping PRAM
- Various Apple support documented tips, including trashing network system library prefs, and other file trashings...

I had limited success yesterday, after I noted that microsoft mouse had 2 startup items in my user account. I removed these, and my system started in the way it should - really quick, solid startup with no disappearances.

Now I think this possibly wasn't the cause as it's started happening again. What seems so strange to me is that I'll do something, and it'll appear to cure the problem, but then there's a relapse! It's doing my head in! Any advice which isn't a complete reinstall would be greatly appreciated.

Incidentally I've been having this problem since 10.4.9 for sure, perhaps 10.4.8, and I'm now on 10.4.10. The system install is a relatively clean one - only a couple of weeks since I completely erased and installed - and I've been having the problem on and off since. Computer is a MacBook Pro 15" C2Duo 2.33.

I'll make another post with a copy of the system log for a troublesome boot.

Thank you in advance

John

Try to disable password protection for all accounts on your computer.

Thank you for your reply. This seems to have worked - could I ask how you knew? Do you know what might have caused it?

I'd rather have to enter a password at startup, but can live without it. Anyway, I'd be interested to know the reason if you have an idea?

Thanks again

What made me think of passwords was this:
/System/Library/StartupItems/AuthServer
I just guessed the AuthServer was the password protection service.
I didn't really have a clue. :p

Well, I'm on day 2 and it hasn't reverted to its beach ball frenzy yet. I'll keep an eye - thanks for your help!

Very nice Quadra800 !

Just as a side note, amongst your 'various trashings' did you trash

com.apple.loginwindow.plist

It would be in Users/yourUsername/Library/Preferences/

It was possibly corrupt, and by trashing that and rebooting it will create a new file...

Also did you have any items set to 'Auto Run' (ie login items) SystemPreferences->Accounts->Login Items

regards

Ric
