ipod classic appears with a locked icon on the desktop

my ipod classic appears with a locked icon on the desktop, will not open in itunes, when i click on ipod on desktop it says i do not have sufficient access privileges. When i get info and try to unlock the read and write privileges it is stuck in custom, can not be changed to read and write. have tried to reset ipod, started in disk mode, have installed latest itunes version. please help, what can i do?

Select the iPad on the desktop, File > Get Info > Ignore ownership on this volume, you may need to enter your password by clicking the little lock.

Hi, thanks, I tried this, but it didn't work either. Not sure what to do. Is there a way to reformat the iPod with disk utility?
