Iphoto issue distorting pics

Hi ...my iphoto just started distorting my photos, when they are thumb size it looks fine but when I expand the image it looks like the attached...also distorted when I transfer to a flash drive, anyone know what's up?? I have version 8.1.2

A few questions to help us focus in on what might be happening:

-Which Mac model and version of OS X?
-Does it only happen with a single photo, a certain group/roll of photos, or all photos?
-If all, what happens if you import a new photo, does it still happen?

I have a MacBookPro OS X vs 10.9.2

It has happened to a few photos now, when I go in to edit and save the changes the saved version is distorted...has happened to some I took a few years ago and others which are more recent. Appears to be random as some I have saved changes successfully without any distortion.

Thanks for any help you can offer ...I'm scared now to go in and do any editing until I figure this out!
