Intel iMac running slow after HDD upgrade

I recently upgraded my Intel Core 2 Duo iMac internal Hard Drive from the original Seagate 160gb HDD to a Western Digital 500gb HDD. They are both 7200 rpm and the seek times are also the same. Not only is the new HDD noisy but my iMac is running consistently slower.
