I have happily used Image Capture for some years but as soon as I updated to Monterey it fell over. The app runs exactly as before: it can read all the photos on my iPhone 8 plus, I select the ones I want to download to my iMac and it tells me it is downloading them but nothing happens. The action wheel spins and spins but nothing is downloaded. Only once (the first time after updating I think) it downloaded the first photo, but no more. I can leave it all night and it snores happily. I have not made any changes prior to Monterey or after, so what can have happened? Even shouting at it doesn't help and it is not an app you can reload from Apple Store.

Hello,
  • Which model Mac?
  • Which version of iOS on the iPhone 8 Plus?
  • Does it work if you import directly into the Photos application?
  • Does the iPhone show in Finder?
  • Is it prompting you to authenticate to access the iPhone?

Sorry about the delay in replying.
My desktop to which I try to download photos is an iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017) running 12.2.1.
My phone is running 15.3.1.
Photos can be downloaded using Photos.app
My phone does show in Finder
It does not ask me to authenticate the phone

When I try again to download using Image Capture, the first one almost always downloads ,though after a pause but no matter how long I leave it all running no more photos will download, the wheel just keeps spinning. I also have loads of space in the Hard Drive.

The software is all up to date, Image Capture still only downloads the first photo in a selected group and then displays the rotating wheel apparently for ever. This is not the coloured pin wheel but the black and white "working wheel".
I have deleted a burst of photos from my phone but even though I have closed and reopened Image Capture it continues to shows those pictures that are no longer on my phone.
If I click on my phone in the sidebar of Finder then click on Update, a box confirms that its software is up to date but the resulting box will not then close and keeps flashing back with the Up to date message. I had to Force Click Finder to stop it.
If I use the PHOTOS.app to download photos, they are not then listed where I keep my many pictures and if I click to copy such a picture from the screen to move it into my pictures files it does move but loses it original camera name and becomes a long reference such as D4B97B44-D82A-4BA7-AE83-31572E835270.jpg which is not a great deal of use.
I can also see an HEIC picture file which has been copied with the correct name but has zero bytes.
What can you suggest apart from shooting it and downloading Moneterey again and/or resetting my phone?

I am wondering if I have clicked the wrong option somewhere since my query of March 10th has been unanswered. I appreciate you have loads to cope with but I am tearing my hair out on this problem.

Thanks for coming back to me. My phone is 15.3.1 and IC is 8.0 (1106). so they should just be OK.

Hi,

My phone does show in Finder
It does not ask me to authenticate the phone

Maybe you need to reset the trust option. Open iTunes and go to Preferences > Advanced > Reset all Warnings, then try again.

I understood that iTunes has been removed from IOS and I certainly cannot find it. I have waited to be allowed to update to 12.3 in case there was a bug but it has not made any difference and I still cannot download more than the first picture in a series.

Hi,

Sorry my hint was to launch iTunes on your Mac then connect you iPhone via wire and re trust the phone as a device.

Since iTunes no longer exists for Macs I asked Apple for help. Their front line agent had to refer me to a specialist who eventually admitted that he had no idea what the problem is but he thought iCloud might be interfering with Image Capture. So I stopped it and it isn't.
I was told that using Image Capture is not the way Apple would prefer me to handle my photographs, but if I preferred it..........
The attitude was that Image Capture is some garden shed app downloaded from the Dark Web, they seemed not to realise that Image Capture is an integral part of Mac's own Operating System and they feel that Photos.app (apparently Apples preferred method) is better despite the amateurish operation that a serious photographer would not use. Use it and your photos disappear into a mud bath of Apple's making and lose the file numbers and all that valuable metadata that Apple's iPhone adds.
It seems that the only way I can copy photos complete with Metadata and file name is to use AirDrop. I realise that Apple's OS is more reliable then Windows because it has fewer twiddly bits but this is not funny and self evidently the problem lies within Monterey itself.

I should have said the replacement app is now music as my screen shot, as you can see my phone is connected.

I am really grateful that you would spend your time on my problem but how can anyone take a manufacturer seriously when they firstly cram so many not musical items into iTunes, delete that and now apparently replace its functions with the Music app. I have spent 15 minutes trying to get Music to do what it it apparently is supposed to do but it is certainly not designed to replace Image Capture and is simply too amateur to bother with. Apple have always had the God-like impression that computer users must do everything how a committee in Seattle thinks they should and apparently always from the basis that snapshots are all and that photos are only sought by day or location. There is a great deal more to serious photography than that.
If MUSIC was intended to replace iTunes or Image Capture then surely they would have said so and more obviously they would have told their Help line staff. The two I spoke to had no concept of any of this, it is self evident that Monterey causes Image Capture to fail and Apple did not know. Perhaps one day they will wake up but in the meantime Air Drop is the best answer.
Thank you again.
