Hello all,

Before I turn my imac into a nice screen for a mac mini, I am wondering whether I should open it and get rid of the 1Tb sata HDD which is now failing and the optic drive which failed so long ago I can't recall when.
Would it help keeping it cool whenever I still use it as main omputer?
Note that I still have the original 256Gb SSD for the system.

Thank you!

Hello,

There are specific models and specs that need to be met to use Target Display Mode. See the following Apple document:

Use your iMac as a display with target display mode

A failing HDD would be good to remove, but the optical won't contribute much heat at all. The SSD would need to be working and running macOS High Sierra or earlier. And, only some models of the Mac mini will work when running macOS Catalina or earlier.

Hope that helps!

Hello Cory,
I'm going to use my 2010 imac with a mac mini M2 and Luna Display.
Thanks for the answer about the HDD, out it is next time I open the iMac for cleaning.
