Icon doesn't change on external HD

My Mac is running the latest OS (10.13.6). A WD external drive (My Book 4TB) connected to it works fine but has its own icon which I would like to change for a custom one. The standard Mac method of copy-paste in Get info doesn’t work. Why not? Help appreciated.

Hello,

I would guess it may still be formatted for Windows. Sometimes that prevents you from adding a custom icon. Do a Get Info on the WD and see what it says.
