I can't get my imac to accept discs

Hi. I have a 24" imac running OS X 10.5.2. I was trying to rip DVD's but when I put my DVD in the disc drive, it wouldn't take it. It actually got stuck so I rebooted holding down the mouse and the disc came out. However, when I try to open the DVD player in applications it gives me the following error: "There was an initialization error - A valid DVD drive could not be found -70012"

Any suggestions?
