How To REALLY Block Pop Ups

My imac is about a year old, running OSX 10.6.5 I did the normal block pop ups
under the Safari pull down, I'm still getting them. Is there a virus that
bypasses the block, or have the creeps found a new method of busting our chops?

I did a search and came up with a bunch topics with no relation to pop ups.
