Command-shift-3 is the shortcut to take an image of the whole screen, if I remember correctly, command-shift-4 makes you select an area to take a picture of, while if you press space after cmd-shift-4 you can click on a window (or menu, icon, the dock, almost anything) to take a picture of that.
...assuming you run OS X now though, I don't remember if the 2nd and 3rd shortcuts exist for OS 9 and down, but the first shortcut should be the same.
