Help; slow mac

I have a 2008 imac that I have never had any problems with. I keep it clean and erase things I don't need every couple of months. Is there an upgrade to the hardware that I can do to make it run faster? It is still a great machine for what I do but I am very frustrated lately because it is so slow. It is current with all the updates and I have never done anything to it as far adding extra RAM or anything else. It is exactly the way it came.

How much free space does your iMac have? Exactly what type of issues re: slow performance, are you experiencing? How much RAM is installed?

just to add to what SD said possibly the occasional permission repair would help a little.

Also reseting the PRAM might help.
