had power cut now won't load! please help!!!

Hey, i had my mac on when we had a power cut, which has happened before n everything was fine. but this time when i turn it on it gets to the blue screen with the lil white circle *as if its loading* and stays there, i've left it on for hours n tryed pressing diff buttons etc but nothing has worked, any idea how i can get it back to normal????? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! thanks x
ps its a mac os x
n i have loads of photos on there that i had not yet put on to disk! i'd only just uploaded them when it stopped working!! totally gutted.

Hi and welcome
Try starting with option/alt key pressed this should find a valid system in order for the machine to start. If that works you should be presented an icon that you click for the machine to start up If that fails you may have to start from your original system disks that came with your machine
