G4 won't start up

New (to me) vintage G4 desktop i got two days ago has started no prob every time until last night. Now i get a restart prompt every time i try to start up. i tried holding down the option key and get three icon choices - OSX, OS9 and ATA HD. i click on OSX and then the right arrow key (also on screen) and then - with the exception of it working one time - get a blue screen with the apple logo and then the screen goes black.

Please advise, thanks.
