In that window, click View > Show View Options in the menu bar. Change the Label position: from Right to Bottom. It should return to the normal icon view.

Not sure if they changed anything, since I am not yet using Sierra.

You could change the view to List View in View Options, then uncheck all of the Show Columns checkboxes. I am not sure of any other way to get the result you are looking for.

I will keep looking,

i dont like it

it would go down the left as far as the window was open and go to another coulumn and so on. just in a plain window with a background, no columns, lists, or cover flow. just snap to grid, alphabetically

I am guessing that it is some form of Finder or View Options preference. Not sure where else to look. I will check on some Macs on Tuesday that are running Sierra.
