hi, i have a PPC g4 powerbook running osx 10.3.9, 512 RAM. recently i've been using activity monitor to watch my RAM use and CPU load because i've been using some more intense applicationa at the same time. i've noticed that every once in a while, the CPU meter is almost maxed out when not much is going on. so i'll look at the AM window, and Finder is using anywhere from 75-94% of the CPU! and it does not decrease after time (even a few minutes). so i've used AM to kill it, and things are normal again.

is there something wrong? any ideas about what i can do to stop this? the wierd thing is that it'll even do it when nothing is running . . .

My first recommendation would be to reset the PRAM.

Restart and immediately hold down the Option-Command-P-R keys simulatneously until you hear the second startup chime.

Le me know if that doesn't fix it.
