I have used Final Cut Pro for many years and it has always worked well. I have made many movies in excess of 2 hours in length without any problems but recently it is taking a silly amount ot time to render files and even longer to save them. Yesterday I finished working on a short 17 minute video, I saved it as an Apple devices 1080p .m4v file and it took over 6 hours to complete with no other applications running. A file this size used to take a few minutes without closing down other applications.

Details of my computer are as follows:-

Mac Pro (Mid 2010)
Operating system - macOS Mojave version 10.14.6 (18G9323)
Processor - 3.46 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon
Memory - 32 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 2 GB
Serial Number - CK04905FEUG
Hardware Overview:

Model Name: Mac Pro
Model Identifier: MacPro5,1
Processor Name: 6-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed: 3.46 GHz
Number of Processors: 1
Total Number of Cores: 6
L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB
L3 Cache: 12 MB
Hyper-Threading Technology: Enabled
Memory: 32 GB
Boot ROM Version: 144.0.0.0.0
SMC Version (system): 1.39f11
SMC Version (processor tray): 1.39f11
Serial Number (system): CK04905FEUG
Serial Number (processor tray): J504500MFCZJB
Hardware UUID: B0E044AD-6812-5145-AC29-17F820C24E33

I have not changed any settings so would be pleased to read any suggestions to overcome this, short of buying a new computer

Hello and welcome.

I don't have much experience with Final Cut Pro personally, but I do use Logic Pro extensively. The only thing I can think of would be to check disk free space/fragmentation.
