My iMac system has 10.6.8. I colour label the folders and files in the iMac and all external drives with their own colour. To do this, I need to view them as lists and select and label them in the file menu. Is there a way of viewing the list of folders with all their file contents, automatically, with one instruction? Clicking on each folder arrow, to view and colour code the files listed under each folder takes ages, when there are hundreds of folders and thousands of files.

If this is not possible, would the new iMac, with OS X El Capitan, manage this?

Hello and welcome.

I found this: Tag folder contents

I created the Automator application outlined in the steps and it seems to work very well on a folder with multiple levels. You can download a ZIP file that has the application in it and try it out:

Automatic Finder Labels

Let me know if that solves your issue,
