Dear Helpers

In 'Open at Login' on my MAC I have 10 items:
5 apps: Calendar, Notes, OpenOffice 2, Pages, Safari
1 Folder: Documents
3 OpenOffice Calc sheets (.ods)
1 Pages document

Since some time (update?) at starting the MAC I get the message:
'[pages file] can't be opened right now. Pages could't read the file. You can try restoring to a previous version.'
Doing so I always see there are no previous versions
I next ge the message: ['pages file] cannot be opened. Operation not permitted'. I answer with 'OK'.
Next I find, that there is no problem opening this file normally from Finder.

Trying to get around this 'special treatment' for this [ pages file] I copied the content to a new OpenOffice Calc file, removed the [pages file] from the login items and replaced it by the new OO calc file

At login, the new .ods file appears allright. But now one of the other older .ods fils does not appear. And without a warning

What happens?

Is there a maximum for the number of items in 'Open at Login'? Or something else? Send this to Apple?

I run a MacBook Air M1 2020 with Sonoma 14.1.2

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Dirk,

There's no strict limit to the number of items you can set to open at login, but having many can sometimes cause conflicts or delays. Here are some steps to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Check File Permissions:
    • Make sure that all the files and applications in your login items have the correct permissions.
    • Right-click on the problematic file(s) in Finder, select "Get Info", and check under "Sharing & Permissions" to ensure you have read and write access.
  2. Reorder Login Items:
    • Sometimes, the order of login items can cause issues. Try removing all items, then add them back one by one, starting with the most important ones first.
  3. Check for Updates:
    • Ensure that macOS and all the applications you're trying to open at login are up to date. Sometimes, updates fix compatibility issues.
  4. Test in Safe Mode:
    • Restart your Mac in Safe Mode (hold Shift during startup). Safe Mode can help isolate software conflicts. If the issue doesn't occur in Safe Mode, a third-party app might be causing the problem.
  5. Create a New User Account:
    • Create a new user account on your Mac (System Preferences > Users & Groups) and set the same login items for this new account to see if the issue persists. This can help determine if the problem is user-specific.
  6. Reset NVRAM/PRAM and SMC:
    • Reset the NVRAM/PRAM and the SMC (System Management Controller) as these can sometimes resolve system-related issues.

Steps to Remove and Add Back Login Items

  1. Remove All Login Items:
    • Go to System Preferences > Users & Groups.
    • Select your user account and click the Login Items tab.
    • Remove all items from the list.
  2. Add Back Items Gradually:
    • Add back your login items one at a time, restarting your Mac after adding each one to identify if a specific item is causing the issue.
Let me know if it helps.

Where is the pages document located?

I had a similar issue with a document a few years ago because the file was trying to open before the OS was fully booted.

The work around that I used was that I wrote an AppleScript that had a 10 second delay before trying to open the file.
