I started getting these alerts a couple weeks ago- a message pops onto the screen about once every 2 minutes, then goes away after about 5 seconds. (see screen shot) This lasts about 10 minutes then goes away for a while. But it's happening every day and it's getting annoying. Clearly I don't want to click on it, so how can I get rid of it? I've got malware detectors, etc, but this keeps coming back. What can I do? MacBook Pro, OS 12.61

Hi, @Visual Thinking
Not an expert in viruses but this indeed seems annoying. You've done well by not clicking on it! Have you tried running an antivirus scan? If that didn't work, consider checking your browser extensions and remove any suspicious ones. Once I've got a really nasty virus through the browser and it was super difficult to get rid of it completely.

Also, you can go to System Preferences > Notifications and look for any unknown applications. Uninstall them if found.

In the worst-case scenario, consider taking your MacBook to an Apple service center.

Good luck and hope my reply helps somehow!

+1 re Malwarebytes.

It might also be worth giving your Mac a more general check over with EtreCheck (free version should be OK).

What application is running when this happens or is this happening with no applications open?

Open Safari, settings, websites, and notifications it's very likely you'll find the culprit there. Also, while still in websites check popup windows, delete any suspicious icons.
