Downloaded files missing their extensions!

I have been searching everywhere for an answer to this. I am going to school online and suddenly about a month ago when I download files they loose their extensions. I see the document, word.doc in the post but when I download it it ends up just being word. Now I can open the files if I know what type they are by opening them from inside the relevant application but it's getting pretty annoying and I know that some change has caused this to happen. I know that sometimes if a PC user saves a file improperly it will cause this but I see this happen very rarely and I don't think that every person in my class is doing this. Any ideas at all would be greatly appriciated! I'm not sure if it's my word version 10.1.6 or Firefox version 1.5.0.9 or mabye evenb the school's server.
