Disappearing Applications

I am a new mac user so the answer to this question may be obvious.

I installed several applications on my desktop (for example, VLC media player) and when I restart my computer they all disappear. I have reinstalled them and restarted my computer several times and this keeps happening.

What can I do to make sure these applications stay installed?

Hello, Try placing them in your Applications folder.

it sounds like you are just mounting the disk images, and not copying the Applications from there onto your drive ?

When you download something what do you do with it ?
