RAID 1
  • Four external drives.
  • Two have been a RIAD-1 (RAID-A) for maybe a year.
  • Two just added and via DISK UTILITY
  • Via DISK UTILTY, set as an second RAID-1*RAID-B).
  • Transferred X number of files to the second RAID-1
  • Via FINDER I looked at the new drives and did not see the second drive.
  • I had moved files OFF the first RAID-A to the RAID-B.
  • Tried to ERASE the first RAID-A.
  • Now, RAID-A is not viewable in FINDER or DISK UTILITY.
  • RAID-B only one drive shows.
  • Moved all data from all four drives
  • DISK UTILYTY does not see any of RAID-A
  • DISK UTILITY only sees one of the RAID-B.
  • Cannot seem to reformat/erase/& etc.
I would like to ERASE all four drives and make the two new ones into a RAID-1.

Suggestions as to what I did wrong and how to accomplish this.

Hello,

Depending on the external enclosure you have, most don't allow multiple RAIDs to be setup, just one RAID setup with all drives in the enclosure. Not sure if Disk Utility will create those via software if all of the drives are in a single enclosure.
  • Which model Mac?
  • Which version of macOS?
  • Which brand/model is the external enclosure?
  • Which brand/model/capacity are the four drives?

IMAC 27. 48RAM. OS 11.7
EXTERNAL DRIVE- TERAMASTER DS-300C
DRIVES-Toshiba Performance X300 8T, 7200 RPM
All drives are Toshiba x300. (8T x 2, 10T x 2)
The Toshiba drives do not show.
I moved 8T drives over to a signal external holder and neither show in Finder or Disk Utility
I believe the 10T Raid is now working, somehow...

OK, thanks.

From the TerraMaster website:
The D5-300C provides 2+3 RAID storage. This means that hard drive1 and hard drive 2 can be configured as RAID 0, RAID 1 or single disk to secure your important data. The remaining drives 3 through 5 work as single, independent drives.

So, it looks like that enclosure supports a hardware RAID for bays 1 and 2 and the other three operate as single drives. You could create a RAID 1 or 0 for the first two drives, and the others should mount on the desktop as three individual drives. Not sure Disk Utility will allow creation of a software RAID for the remaining three drives in that enclosure.

You will probably need to use Disk Utility to erase the 8 TB drives, since it sounds like they were part of a hardware RAID (bays 1 and 2) in the TerraMaster.

Of course, make sure you have the data backed up to another drive not be used in this thread.

Have you reached out to TerraMaster support?

I do not worry about 8T data. I have tried to erase, but Disk Utility does not see them. Even is I move them to a Anker external drive bay. I have tried with both of them.

I do not understand why I cannot get to them????

Just checked one of the 10T. It is also not working. Not sure why this message comes up for it and not the 8T drives..??

Interesting that I can see the 10T drives in Finder, and can write files to them...?
But Disk Utility only shows them in grey.
