When I try to access a trusted university site where I work. INo issue anywhere else I visit, It started after the latest OS upgrade a few days ago. 3 university IT pros tried to he lp, but now conclude they believe it is Apple-related.

The machine will fail to verify a certificate if it has expired. It means that Apple won't guarantee you can trust the site. But you can require that your machine trust it.
You can also just erase the certificate and hope that next time you go to the site it'll reload a valid one.

I have a GREAT SOLUTION to the BAD DATA 502 issue, thanks to an Apple tech consultant. And it is a rather simple one. Create a "NEW USER" account for yourself on your MacBook. Then, whenever you need to log into the problematic web site, simply use it instead id your regular user account. Now, if I can just learn how to share all files between these two user accounts, life will be even simpler.

To add a user
  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups . ...
  2. Click the Add button below the list of users.
  3. Click the New Account pop-up menu, then choose a type of user. ...
  4. Enter a full name for the new user. ...
  5. Enter a password for the user, then enter it again to verify. ...
  6. Click Create User.
  7. Then log into the problematic web site as usual
GOOD LUCK
