Can't control phone volume

This is a new problem with me. I got a phone call earlier today when I had my AirPods in my ear, and the volume was way, way too loud. I tried to adjust it pulling out my phone and using its volume buttons on the side, then I opened the Control Center and adjust the volume. Later on I had my wife call me with and without my AirPods on. I couldn't adjust the volume, but only the AirPods were too loud.

Any idea what I'm missing here?

Hello,

I would try fully quitting all apps, power cycling the iPhone and/or force restarting it, then unpair and re-pair the AirPods. See if that restores normal volume function.
