can't access iphoto after updating to el capitan

When I try to access iphoto is says I need to update it at the Apple store. However, the Apple store says it doesn't have an update in US.
Any suggestions? I have hundreds of photos I can't access.

The simplest thing is to use Photos, which replaced iPhoto. Photos will import all your pictures from your iPhoto Library.
