browsers crashing immediately

Running Mac OS X version 10.4.6. Using internet minimally for mail & research. Browsers (Safari & Firefox) crash before homepage (msn) even completely loads or after going to first tab. Have tried all suggestions I've read in forums. Have upgraded to latest version of Firefox, but can't upgrade to Safari 5 with my OS X version (did a basic re-set on Safari however). Have upgraded Java plug-in. Have done a MacScan and found nothing invasive and zero spyware, etc.. Have never had this problem in the past. Thank you for any help!
