All memory slots currently in use...

I have a 2012 MacBook Pro. I upgraded and have 2 slots of 2GB each of memory but they are 'all in use'. I cannot sync my iPhone as I don't have enough "free memory". I cleared a lot of big files, which freed up significant space on my hard drive but the start up discs are still in use. What can I do?

can you post the exact wording of the message you see when you connect your iPhone to your MBP?
